Jokhang temple is the oldest and most sacred temple in Lhasa. It is surrounded by the busy Bakor Street. Hence, you will find the pilgrims encircling the temple in the Bakor street which looks a bit of hassle and a little of fascination. Besides palaces and temples, Sera monastery and Drepung monastery are the other major attractions in Lhasa. They are the must visit monasteries manifested with excellent art and architecture. From white color of wall, golden color of roofs to the paintings, surroundings and statues; everything about these monasteries is so pure and so auspicious. Sera monastery is one the largest monasteries that used to have around 10000 monks. The number of monks has reduced to some extent, however, it is one of the largest monasteries.
Then also visit to the Ganden Monastery (3,800m) which is is one of the great three Gelug university monasteries of Tibet. It is one of the renowned and oldest 14th century Buddhist monasteries of Tibet. Founded in 1409 by Je Tsongkhapa Lozang-dragpa, Ganden is located on the Wangbur Mountain and on the southern bank of Khasa River. The monastery believes in study of scriptural texts. This monastery contains more than 2 dozen chapels consisting large Buddha statues and 2 colleges Gaden Shartse and Gaden Jangtse. The visitors can explore the Serdung where lies the tomb of Tsgonkhapa. There are several artifacts in the monastery from the era of Tsongkhapa. In 1959 more than 7500 monks used to live and study in the monastery. Young monks come to this monastery for shelter and education.
