People have been fascinated by Mount Everest for centuries, with Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa being the first people to successfully summit the mountain in 1953. Since then, hundreds of travelers flock to Nepal every year to see the mountains that have captured the hearts and minds of so many people throughout history.
The 16-day Everest Base Camp Trek is not simply a regular tour, but an experience of a lifetime. You will spend your days walking along rugged Himalayan trails with views of snow-capped mountains, icy glaciers, and Sherpa heritage. You will also be introduced to some of the world’s highest mountains including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Cho Oyu, to name just a few. Furthermore, you will be able to experience the Sherpa lifestyle and grow to appreciate their exceptional hospitality.
Every step of your Trek to Everest Base Camp will be incredible, beginning with the scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The 30-minute flight will treat you to views of lush green Himalayan forests and snow-capped peaks. With a runway of only 527 meters long, the Tenzing-Hillary Airport has one of the shortest runways in the world, adding to the adventure.
After landing in Lukla, the trek begins through the narrow alleyways of the village. Here, the walk is relatively easy and gradual as you walk along the Dudh Koshi River. After passing through the Sherpa villages of Phakding, Benkar, and Jorsalle, you will arrive in Namche Bazarr, also known as the gateway to the Himalayas.
Here, you will have some time to acclimatize and rest before moving on. You will walk through the pine forest to Tengboche where you will visit Khumbu’s largest monastery and gain a deeper understanding of the spiritual aspects of the mountains. You will also witness stunning views of Ama Dablam, Mount Everest, and Nuptse.
As you continue walking to Dingboche, you will pass many villages, mani walls, and chortens, with views of Ama Dablam in the background. Located at 4410 meters, Dingboche will be your second acclimatization stop. On this leisure day, you may hike to the nearby Nagarjun hill to take in the surrounding hills and mountains that make up the Everest Region.
After this rest day, you will move on towards Lobuche. At this time, the trail becomes a bit drier and the mountains will become even closer as you pass through ancient stone-walled villages. On the way to Lobuche, you will cross Thukla Pass, which is decorated with stone shrines and memorials of climbers who did not make it home.
After that, you will walk along the Moraine of Khumbu Glacier towards Gorak Shep. The terrain will be quite rocky but this simply means you have almost reached your destination – Everest Base Camp!
The next morning, you can hike to Kala Patthar, which is a gray-green cliff, just beneath Mount Pumori. This is a famous viewpoint at 5545 meters and is the highest elevation on the 16-day Everest Base Camp Trek. After reaching the Summit, you will be treated to a 360-degree panoramic view of the Himalayas including Mount Everest, Nuptse, Pumori, and Changtse.
After making it to Everest Base Camp and reveling in your accomplishment, you will begin to retrace your footsteps, walking back to Lukla and flying to Kathmandu.
